Brigantine Residents Concerned About Their Health As Brigantine NJ Reopens To Summer Renters./ Reader Feedback. Residents Protesting Summer Rental Reopening In Front Of The Island Municipal Building At 1417 West Brigantine Ave. June 4, 2020 8:47AM / By Brigantine Island News
BRIGANTINE — City Council announced Wednesday it has lifted the ban on short-term rentals, effective immediately. The city issued the ban in early April for all short-term rentals, which include stays up to 180 days, to slow the spread of COVID-19. Deputy Mayor Vince Sera said the city could not regulate a renter getting their deposit back if they lost their reservation during the ban. It's not just a decision that we as a council need to make, it’s a decision that the community itself needs to be comfortable (with), and people seemed to be comfortable with that.” As orders trickled down from federal and state officials about staying at home, wearing mask… Councilman Dennis Haney said he had tried to push to lift the short-term rental ban last week, to no avail. “I thought that, really, we were at a solid footing to have that done,” he said, adding many shore towns in the area permitted short-term rentals in late May. “It was a beautiful weekend,” he said. “It would have been awesome to have (short-term rentals) last weekend.” While many shore towns have been listening to the directives of the state on what to open and when, restrictions on short-term rentals were left to local government, according to executive and administrative orders issued by Gov. Phil Murphy.
BRIGANTINE — The city also will open The Cove beach to drive-on vehicles Saturday as well as municipal tennis, pickleball and bocce ball courts. It is still in talks on when to open community pools and the farmer’s market.
In the early morning, on Thursday June 4, 2020 around 8:00 AM both residents and employees of Brigantine NJ where shocked to find a large number of peaceful protesters in front of the local municipal building. These protesters consist of both Brigantine residents and Atlantic City residents waving signs and yelling both treating and racial slurs. Brigantine Mayor Andy Simpson said in a press release, " This country is become a war zone in every way you could think of. Who would have thought that something as unexpected and power as COVID-19 would have come and affected the country, our country this way. Now after surviving the worst and unthinkable our own Brigantine residents have gathered and are treating to destroy their very own city. This behavior will not be tolerated after the advents of the last week. I have posted both local and state police outside of all government buildings on the island today. Anyone who attempts to damage city or residential property shall be taken into custody immediately and be prosecuted by the City Of Brigantine. "
This shows a new light on the situation in Brigantine NJ, we asked the Office Of The Mayor if he would be considering closing summer rentals again and were told that they would discuss the issue with the city council get let the public know within the next few hours.

Mayor Andy Simpson's Statement on Riots and Domestic Terrorism Occurring In Brigantine NJ
Mayor Andy Simpson has issued the following statement:
“With the rioting that is occurring in our beautiful city of Brigantine, the voices of peaceful and legitimate protests have been hijacked by violent radical elements. Groups of outside radicals and agitators are exploiting the situation to pursue their own separate, violent, and extremist agenda.
It is time to stop watching the violence and to confront and stop it. The continued violence and destruction of property endangers the lives and livelihoods of others, and interferes with the rights of peaceful protestors, as well as all other citizens and residents of our island.
It also undercuts the urgent work that needs to be done – through constructive engagement between affected communities and law enforcement leaders – to address legitimate grievances. Preventing reconciliation and driving us apart is the goal of these radical groups, and we cannot let them succeed.
It is the responsibility of local law enforcement to ensure that these violent protesters are removed or arrested before any damage is caused to our residents or their properties. Over the past few hours I have requested the aid of the Nj State Police and National Guard. Both agencies have deployed patrols on the streets to reestablish law and order. We saw this finally happen in Atlantic City last night, and it worked so therefore it will work here.
Federal law enforcement actions will be directed at apprehending and charging the violent radical agitators who have hijacked peaceful protest and are engaged in violations of federal law.
To identify criminal organizers and instigators, and to coordinate federal resources with our state and local partners, federal law enforcement is using our existing network of regional FBI Joint Terrorism Task Forces. The violence instigated and carried out by Antifa and other similar groups in connection with the rioting is domestic terrorism and will be treated accordingly.”
We are strong, close knit community and I believe that after all we have gone through together in the past months we will get through this as well. Brigantine Chief of Police, Richard Casamento says to expect the violence to increase as the evening goes on and continue into the early morning of June 2. We are asking that you avid leaving your home for any reason other then going to and from your job or if you are seeking police or medical assistance.
Brigantine will continue to be vigilant in our patrols this evening as the situation in our area remains volatile. Please report any and all suspicious activity and crimes in progress in Brigantine to Police Dispatch at 911 or 609-266-7414. Due to the high level of incoming calls 911 response time may be delayed and will be responded to as calls come in. Please refrain from calling 911 unless there is a valid emergency occurring. All other calls can and should wait until the morning of June 2, 2020.
Thank you for your cooperation during these trying times and we keep you updated as the situation unfolds.

Verbal threats, the ‘egging’ of their properties, and let’s not forget social media shaming. Yup. Still lot’s of shoobie-go-home rhetoric. What else is new. So much going on…. so here’s a heart-warming collection of COVID-19 social media feedback, reader posts and comments we’ve collected. Driving in Brigantine? Be careful if you have PA or NY tags. Brigantine insiders not shy about telling you to turn your sorry ass around… and go back to where you came from.
Brigantine Mayor Andy SimpsonBe honest. If you’re one of 500+ Brigantine properties owners that depend on AirBnB and VRBO to help pay your taxes and mortgage, do you think Mayor Andy Simpson and Brigantine City Council will treat you fairly? They will drag their feet before lifting your short-term rental ban. Don’t contaminate our turf. Stop buying our toilet paper. And don’t forget, taxes are due May 1. We’re full-time residents of Brigantine. We also own additional properties in Brigantine and other shore towns as investment properties. We use online platforms like AirBnB to run our short-term rental business. We found it cheaper and easier than using local real estate offices. This is not a slight against realtors. But truly, it’s just not easy working with real estate agents connected to City Hall and the Chamber of Commerce. Neighbor against neighbor. Ratting out your neighbor. Selective enforcement of confusing and poorly written ordinance. Picking winners and losers in Brigantine. Simpson and Riordan never letting a crisis go to waste. Egregious mismanagement and corruption crippling key economic drivers of Brigantine: Real Estate and short-term rentals.
